The Beijing-based artist is sometimes called “The Invisible Man” because in nearly all his art, Bolin is front and center — and completely unseen. using quantifiers in ACADEMIC WRITING

Today we are doing some exercises and learn how can we use quantifiers while explaining graphs in IELTS academic writing task 1.

In Part 1 of the IELTS writing test you may have to describe amounts. You’ll need to be careful using quantifiers words like ‘much’, ‘many’, ‘some’ etc.
In the exercise below you need to put the words and expressions into the correct group.

In this next exercise, the table below show how men and women spend their time each day and you need to complete the description by choosing the best word or phrase for each gap.

PPF Strategy – SPEAKING Part 2

Let us talk about PPF strategy in the IELTS Speaking test where not only your fluency and coherence will be assessed but you must demonstrate knowledge of a range of more complex grammar structures accurately.

As you know in Part 2 of the Speaking test you have to talk for 1-2 mins about a topic from a topic card and 1 min will be given to prepare.

For example you are required to speak on a memorable trip.

What was the most memorable trip you’ve ever taken?
When did you go?
Where did you go?
What did you do?
Why was it memorable?

PPF stands for (Past, Present, Future). You can see in the worksheet different underlined verbs, so write Past, Present, Future on the left of the worksheet.

Notes:

  • It is not essential that you must talk about past, present and future in Speaking Part 2
    This strategy is an aid to help you to develop your answer. It is also likely to help you
    demonstrate knowledge of a wider range of structures.
  • It might not be natural, for example, to stick to future tenses only when talking about the future (see the ‘future’ extract on the worksheet – the speaker uses present perfect). Again, this doesn’t matter. The important thing is to try to develop your answers

Alternative suggestion

PPF strategy can be used with any Speaking Part 2 task.
e.g. describe an important building in your country, describe a film you have learnt something from, etc; try to give PP and F sentences for each.

In this fun, short talk from TEDYouth, lexicographer Erin McKean encourages — nay, cheerleads — her audience to create new words when the existing ones won’t quite do. She lists out 6 ways to make new words in English, from compounding to “verbing,” in order to make language better at expressing what we mean, and to create more ways for us to understand one another.

WRITING task 1 general training

This is general training module writing task 1. The question is taken from Cambridge English IELTS 10 by Vanessa Jakeman and Clare McDowell. This is a formal letter writing task.

Do not forget to make a mind map to all the bullet points given, when all your ideas gathered, craft your letter.

You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.
People in your area are having problems with their internet connection.
Write a letter to the company which provides the connection. In your letter

• describe the problem
• explain how they are affecting people
• lay what the company should do to help

You do not need to write any addresses
Begin your letter like this
Dear Sir or Madam,

Write at least 150 words.

SPEAKING phase 2 prompt

This is IELTS speaking phase 2 prompt. As you already know that phase 2 and 3 are connected with each other. Part 2 is an individual long turn phase of about 3-4 minutes and tests your ability to talk at length, organizing your ideas coherently.

The examiner will give you a task card that asks you to talk about a particular topic and includes points that you can cover in your talk. It is not necessary for to talk about them in order. You have one minute to prepare your talk and a pencil and paper will be provided you to make your notes. You must talk for one to two minutes on the topic. The examiner will then ask you one or two questions on the same topic.

Part 3 is a two-way discussion of about 4-5 minutes.The questions are connected to the topic of Part 2. Part 3 is a discussion between you and the examiner in which you discuss more abstract issues and ideas. Part 3 tests your ability to express and justify opinions, and to analyse, discuss and speculate.

Describe your favourite season.
You should say:

what the season is and when it occurs
what the weather is like during this season
what your typical activities are during this season
and explain why it is your favourite season.

Skimming and scanning activities in READING

My dear friends, skimming and scanning is an art which plays a key role in your IELTS reading test and if you are unaware of this art then it is good to practice it beforehand otherwise you might be in trouble on your final day.
